There are things like MySQL and gd. I run Subversion as a server for my public project repositories.

To get the "recent" section in the footer, I use PHP's SimpleXMLElement object to read my own Atom feed. It's a great class, if you haven't used it.
This server is hosted by GoDaddy. It is a "virtual-dedicated" server
running inside virtualization software. It uses Plesk.
